Frequently Asked Questions

Comprehensive guidance on our workshop processes, instrument care, and business policies. We believe in complete transparency to ensure your instrument receives the precise attention it requires.

Maintaining a musical instrument is a partnership between the musician and the luthier. To help you prepare for your visit to our Adelaide studio, we have compiled this detailed FAQ. Whether you are bringing in a professional cello, a vintage guitar, or arranging a mobile piano tuning, understanding our workflow helps us provide the highest standard of care. All our procedures are designed to protect the structural integrity of your instrument while optimising its acoustic performance.

Please note that while these answers provide a general framework, every instrument is unique. For specific technical enquiries regarding a rare instrument or a complex restoration, we encourage you to reach out via our contact page for a personalised consultation.

Intake and Diagnostics

Our intake process is designed to be thorough and non-invasive. When you drop off your instrument at our Rundle Street studio, we perform an initial visual and structural assessment.

How much does the initial diagnostic cost?

The initial diagnostic fee is $0. We provide a basic assessment of your instrument's condition and identify necessary repairs or adjustments free of charge to ensure you have a clear understanding of the requirements before proceeding.

Do I need an appointment for a diagnostic?

While we welcome enquiries, we strongly recommend booking an appointment to ensure a master luthier is available to examine your instrument immediately upon arrival. This prevents unnecessary waiting times in the studio.

What happens during the diagnostic process?

We check for structural cracks, neck relief, fret wear, bridge stability, and overall acoustic balance. For wind instruments, we perform a pad leak test and mechanical alignment check. For bowed instruments, we inspect the soundpost and bridge height.

Can I get a diagnostic for an instrument I haven't bought yet?

Yes, we can provide professional assessments for potential purchases. Please contact us to arrange a time to bring the instrument into the workshop for a formal evaluation.

Timelines and Turnaround

We balance precision with efficiency. Because we maintain a strict climate-controlled environment (45-55% humidity), some processes require the instrument to stabilise before final adjustments are made.

What is the average turnaround time for a setup?

Our average setup time is 5 days. This allows for careful adjustment, testing, and the necessary stabilisation period to ensure the instrument remains consistent after leaving the workshop.

Can I request an urgent repair?

We understand that concert dates and auditions are critical. Please inform us of your deadline during the diagnostic; we will do our best to accommodate your schedule, though precision cannot be rushed.

How do I know when my instrument is ready?

Once the work is completed and quality-checked, we notify you via your preferred contact method. We provide a detailed report of the works performed along with the instrument.

Does the timeline vary by instrument type?

Yes. A standard guitar setup typically follows our 5-day average, whereas a full refret or a wind instrument overhaul may take longer. Your specific timeline will be detailed in the agreed estimate.

Pricing and Estimates

All our pricing is transparent and inclusive of the 10% GST where applicable. We do not believe in hidden costs or surprise charges after the work is completed.

How is the final price determined?

After the free diagnostic, we provide a formal estimate. We operate on a strict rule of agreement: the estimate is coordinated and approved by the client before any work begins. If additional issues are discovered during the process, we stop and seek further approval.

Do you offer B2B payment terms for schools or orchestras?

Yes, for registered educational institutions and professional ensembles, we offer B2B payment terms of 30 days from the date of invoice.

Are parts included in the setup price?

Standard setup prices generally cover labour. Specific replacement parts (such as high-end strings or specialty bridges) are quoted separately in the estimate to allow you to choose the materials that suit your preference.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards, electronic bank transfers, and EFTPOS at our Adelaide studio.

Warranty and Storage

We stand by the quality of our craftsmanship. Our warranty focuses on the stability and precision of the work performed by our technicians.

What is the warranty period for repairs?

We provide a 6-month warranty on our labour. This covers the specific adjustments or repairs performed. Please note that this warranty does not cover the instrument itself, natural wear and tear, or damage caused by environmental changes outside our control.

How long can I leave my instrument in the shop after it's ready?

We provide a complimentary storage period of 14 days after we notify you that the work is complete. After this period, we may apply a daily storage fee to manage our limited workshop space.

What happens if I am unhappy with the setup?

We encourage clients to test their instrument in the studio upon collection. If the action or intonation is not to your preference, we will make immediate adjustments to ensure the instrument meets your playing style.

Is my instrument insured while in your care?

We maintain professional liability insurance and a secure, monitored facility. For extremely high-value collector instruments, we recommend notifying your own insurance provider that the instrument is undergoing professional maintenance.
